Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team placed third at the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial on Tuesday beating out No. 8-ranked Christopher Newport by two strokes.
Eddie Coffren V (73-69--142) finished in the top-10 for the second-straight tournament and the sixth time in his career. He shot even par and tied for third. At the Gate City in mid-September, Coffren V shot -3 over three rounds and tied for second. With 10 birdies, Coffren V vaulted Lynchburg to its second-consecutive third place finish this season. The Hornets shot 296 in Round 1 and 295 in Round 2 for a 591 final tally.
Andrew Watson (72-72--144) shot +2 on the par-71 course at the Cardinal by Pete Dye and joined Coffren V in the top-10. Watson placed seventh which was good for the sixth top-10 finish in his career.
Harrison Smith (71-77--148) was in a tie for second after Round 1 and wound up in a tie for 16th after 36 holes. It was Smith's best finish at a tournament since placing sixth at the Shenandoah Invitational in 2021.
Alan Van Asch (82-77--159) and Simon Burgos (80-80--160) rounded out Lynchburg's scoring lineup.
Lynchburg's two individuals at the tournament, Ben Chamberlin (78-74--152) and Tate Corbett (76-82--158) impressed despite not being in the lineup. Chamberlin tied for 31st in his first "A-team" tournament as a freshman, and Corbett turned in four birdies and an eagle as he tied for 63rd. Watson also carded an eagle for the Hornets.
Lynchburg beat seven of the eight Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams in the field and finished two strokes in front of eighth-ranked Christopher Newport. The Hornets received votes in the initial Golf Coaches Association of America rankings but were eight spots out of the top-25.
Lynchburg tees it up in Ligonier, Pa. for the Tartan Invitational beginning Monday, Oct. 9.
