Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team won its ninth-straight contest and remained perfect on the road in a 2-1 victory over Washington & Lee Saturday afternoon.
The game was a rematch of the 2022 ODAC conference championship game, a 1-0 Washington and Lee win in overtime.
That game was also in Lexington and Lynchburg had lost three-straight to the Generals on their home field coming in, but got over the hump using a strong first half offensively to carry the 14th-ranked Hornets to a 4-0 road record.
One week after defeating then No. 19 Shenandoah on the road, Lynchburg won another battle of unbeaten teams in conference play, placing them alone atop the league standings with only Roanoke left unblemished behind them.
Lynchburg controlled pace of play from the outset, taking the game's first seven shots with the fifth resulting in the first Hornet goal, a strike from Marlou Wendriks with Ryleigh Cameron assisting.
Wendriks, who is the Hornets' leading scorer for the second consecutive year in as many seasons with the team, scored her 10th goal of the year and has scored a point in nine-straight games.
Washington and Lee's lone shot in the first quarter did not come until the 14th minute and was sent wide of the cage.
The two teams combined to take just five shots in the second but Lynchburg was able to double its lead on the back of an Olivia van Metre goal in the 27th minute. Aaryn Boatwright assisted on the score.
After being held scoreless through her first eight appearances of the season, the junior forward has scored five goals over the past four games, making three consecutive starts and becoming a vital part of the Lynchburg offense.
Boatwright has recorded an assist in four straight games and has six on the year.
The Generals made a change at goalkeeper to begin the second half and held Lynchburg scoreless across the third and fourth quarters.
Washington and Lee took a shot advantage in the third quarter, controlling possession in their attacking third but failing to get on the board after 45 minutes.
Kayla Brady was tested for the first time halfway through the third quarter and made each of her two saves on the day in the second half.
Washington and Lee generated a penalty corner in the 53rd minute, drawing Brady out of the goal on the initial shot before collecting the rebound and sending it into the back of the cage to cut the Lynchburg lead in half.
Washington and Lee got just one more shot off across the game's final seven minutes and Lynchburg controlled possession when the final whistle blew.
The Hornets continued their best start in nearly 15 years and their nine-game win streak is the longest since the spring 2021 season in which they finished 10-0. They have allowed just four goals over the streak.
Lynchburg (11-1, 4-0 ODAC) will return home to play Ferrum on Wednesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road for a two-game road trip the following weekend against No. 11 Kean and No. 25 Swarthmore.
