Men's basketball puts on a clinic in season-opener

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team scored its most points in a game since 2018 Saturday night to open up the season. 

Lynchburg defeated Regent 99-45 with 17 players recording at least two points. Graduate transfer Cameron O'Conner led the way for the Hornets with 14.

Lynchburg opened up the game with a 13-0 lead five minutes into play. The Hornets reached their largest lead of the first after Piercen Young caused a turnover and went coast to coast for the easy layup in transition. Young's layup put the Hornets up 40-8. 

Lynchburg made seven 3s in the first half and only allowed one make from deep by the Royals. Jayson Easton shot 75% (3-4) from deep and finished with nine points. The team as a whole shot 38.7% (12-31) from downtown in the contest. Deondre Ross, another transfer for the Hornets dazzled with is driving ability and knack for creating at the rim. He finished with seven points. 

Jonathan Foust, who also scored nine points, made a layup after a steal from O'Conner early in the second and gave Lynchburg its largest lead for the time being at 58-25. The Hornets earned their largest lead of the night after a pair of free throws from Kavon James put the Hornets up by 56. 

Freshman point guard Jake Hart tallied five assists in the second half to get his total up to seven. He only turned the ball over once in his collegiate-debut. Lynchburg's 27 assists as a team tied for the ninth-most in a single game by a Lynchburg team in program history. It was their most since dishing out 36 against King's in 2017. 

Lynchburg forced 36 turnovers and converted those Regent miscues into 62 points. O'Conner, Young, and Landon Sutton all had three steals. 

Lynchburg (1-0) hosts Pfeiffer on Wednesday, Nov. 15 at 5 p.m.
