Johnson earns 300th win

Box Score

Bridgewater, Va. -- University of Lynchburg men's and women's director of tennis Chris Johnson earned his 300th win Wednesday afternoon.

Johnson, in his seventh season with Lynchburg, totaled his 300th win after the men's and women's teams defeated Bridgewater on the road. Both teams took down the Eagles 8-1.

"Over 19 years in coaching I'm thankful for many things but mostly for the players and the relationships you build with them," Johnson said. "You ask them to give everything they have, and they do…not one of those wins is possible without them."

Johnson previously coached at Liberty University and earned 117 wins with the men's team and 64 with the women's team at the Division I level.

At Lynchburg, he coached the women's team to its fourth-straight ODAC semifinal appearance in 2022. He also help lead Christina Harris to her ODAC player of the year award in 2019. Johnson has revitalized the men's team with seven new players for 2023. The men enjoyed a five-match winning streak earlier in the season marking its longest winning streak since at least the 2003-04 campaign.

On Wednesday, the men kicked off the 8-1 win over Bridgewater taking two out of three in doubles play. Sebastian Sierra and Alex Rintoul won 8-5 at No. 2, and Cooper Brewen and Dan Hardy won 8-1 at No. 3.

The Hornets swept singles action led by a win at the top flight from Emile Paindavoine. Lauren Muhlhause won 6-3, 6-1 at the second flight.

Sierra won a hard-fought match at No. 3 winning the first set in a tiebreak. Rintoul only lost one game at No. 4, and Christian Zepeda and Patricio Zepeda rounded out the win with victories at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively.

Lynchburg's men's tennis team earned its ninth win on the season marking its most wins in a season since 2017-18. The Hornets (9-5, 4-2 ODAC) take on Hampden-Sydney on the road Thursday, April 13.

The women's team also defeated Bridgewater 8-1. The women swept doubles play. Grace Teefey and Elizabeth Teefey won 8-2 at the top flight, Alexa Hardesty and Lara Karrass won 8-2 at No. 2, and Ashley Hair and Reese McAtee won 8-6 at the third flight.

Elizabeth Teefey continued her impressive season at the first flight with a 6-0, 7-5 win. Hair won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2.

The Hornets played tightly-contested matches at the third and fourth flights. After winning the first set, Karrass took the second in a tiebreak at No. 3. Hardesty dropped the first set at No. 4. The senior won the second set 7-5 (3) forcing a tiebreak to decide the match. She perservered to a 12-10 victory.

Grace Teefey won Lynchburg's eighth point 8-6.

The Hornets (9-5, 4-3 ODAC) will play Hollins next on Sunday, April 16.
