Softball upsets third ranked team of the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team upset second-ranked Christopher Newport in Game 2 of a double-header Monday.

The Hornets won 8-2 after falling 4-0 in Game 1. Amala Clawson earned her first-collegiate start in the win, pitched 5.2 innings, and only allowed three hits. The junior was shutting out the Captains until the 6th inning.

Clawson took over on the bump for Kailey Dorcsis in Game 1 with Lynchburg trailing 4-0. She got through her 6th and 7th inning assignments without allowing a run, but Lynchburg's offense did not put any runs on the board. Lexi Powell went 3-3 at the plate with a pair of bunt singles, and Carly Hudnall also had a multihit game in the loss.

Clawson stayed in the circle and started Game 2. Lynchburg gave Clawson a lead in the 3rd when Powell drove home Hundall.

CNU battled back with two runs in the 6th, knocked Clawson out of the game, and took a 2-1 lead.

Lynchburg rallied in the bottom of the inning. Sarah Watts started the rally with a leadoff single, and the Hornets loaded the bases with no outs.

Alex DiNardo tied the game up with a pinch-hit walk, and the flood gates opened after that.

Lynchburg took the lead after Alyssa Talayumptewa reached on an error. Skylar Sams came home to score on the play.

The line kept moving as the Hornets poured it on. Kaleigh Hackett, Hudnall, Watts, and Sams all drove in runs on singles as Lynchburg turned their comeback effort into a blowout 8-2.

Dorcsis benefited from Lynchburg's seven-run inning as the pitcher of record and closed out the game for her ninth win of the season.

The Hornets took down their third top-10 team of the season after previously downing No. 1 Salisbury and No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan.

Lynchburg (20-14, 8-6 ODAC) hit the road for a double-header with Bridgewater on Wednesday, April 19. The Eagles are in first place in the conference while Lynchburg sits in sixth.
