Indianapolis, Ind. -- The season continues for the Lynchburg men's lacrosse team!
The Hornets earned one of the NCAA Division III men's lacrosse championship tournament's 10 at-large berths into the 36-team field. The 11th-ranked Hornets bypassed the first round and will take on St. John Fisher in the second round on Saturday, May 13 at 4 p.m.
Lynchburg travels to Granville, Ohio where Denison University will host a four-team pod. No. 6 Denison will take on the winner of Aurora and Illinois Welsyan. The winners of Saturday's games will play on Sunday for a chance at the quarterfinals.
The Hornets earned a spot in the tournament after a 13-win season over one of the most challenging schedules in the country. Lynchburg earned ranked wins over No. 12 Cabrini and No. 6 Washington and Lee in overtime. Lynchburg also took No. 6 Salisbury and No. 1 Christopher Newport to overtime but fell in closely-contested and memorable games on Shellenberger Field.
The Hornets also played in the conference championship for the ninth-straight time with a chance at a third-straight title. They fell to the Generals of Washington and Lee 12-11.
Lynchburg is led by 10 all-conference players with half those award winners on the first team.
Tyler Hadley leads the league with a 58.7 save percentage and 12 wins in goal. Riley Mitchell paces the team with 56 points, and Jake Rust has the most goals on the squad with 35.
Three freshman are in the top-five of the team's point scorers. The Hornets roll out three first-years, Riley Hastings, Finn Schmidt, and Spencer Vandenberg, on their starting attack. Hastings is the team leader with 30 assists while Schmidt and Vandenberg are fourth and fifth on the team with 40 and 35 points, respectively.
Lynchburg secured its 16th trip to the postseason tournament which is the second-most across Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams. Lynchburg's 13 wins in 28 NCAA tournament games is good for the best NCAA winning percentage in the conference.
