Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team shot a program-record 275 in the third round of the Gate City Invitational Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets shot 293 and 285 on Day 1 Monday before securing a third-place finish and an 853 total score Tuesday. Eddie Coffren V, Andrew Watson, and Simon Burgos all shot 68 Tuesday.
Before carding the second 68 of his career, Coffren V shot a 71 and a 69 in Rounds 1 and 2. He made six birdies Monday and nearly doubled that total with five more Tuesday. His 11 birdies were tied for the sixth-most in the field, and he tied for second out of 90 players. It is Coffren's seventh top-10 finish and tied for his second-best finish in a tournament. The Owings, Md. native also had a T2nd performance in his collegiate debut at the Kinder-Williams in 2021.
Watson and Burgos both sky-rocketed up 25 spots on the leaderboard Tuesday into a tie for 19th with their 68s. Burgos made five birdies in Round 3, and Watson made four birdies and an eagle.
Harrison Smith (71-75-72--218) started his tournament with two-straight birdies on his way to a T25th finish.
Alan Van Asch (78-69-71--218) had the second-best round of his college career in Round 2 with a 68 as he tied for 25th with Smith.
Lynchburg paced the championship-caliber field with an average score of 4.67 on the par 5s and made the second-most pars in the 18-team field.
The Hornets finished six strokes behind Oglethorpe and 22 behind first-place Emory.
With Lynchburg's record-setting performance, the Hornets await the first SPIKEMARK rankings on Friday, Oct. 15.
Before that, the Hornets will tee it up at the O'Briant-Jensen back in Greensboro, N.C. beginning Monday, Oct. 2.
