Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team opened its fall slate of competitions with the Gate City Invite, hosted by Greensboro, and finished with a team score of +3 to earn 13th place of 18 fielded teams this past Monday and Tuesday.Â
"It was great being back out on the course and competing again!" said head men's golf coach Allen Smith. " We didn't have our best stuff this week, but saw a lot of positives and we're very excited for our next tournament in Douglasville, Ga."
After shaking off some rust in the first round of the contest with a +9 team score, the Hornets bounced back with good form to finish the second round with a -1 team score. The third and final round of the outing was Lynchburg's best showing of the invitational as they finished with a -5 team score.
Junior
Alan Van Asch highlighted the Hornets' performance with a -1 final result and ended in 23rd overall. Van Asch powered through the invite with consistency, finishing even in the first two rounds and closing out with a -1 score in the final round. Freshman
Cooper Mizelle produced the best single-round performance on the Hornet squad with a -5 score in the third round of the invite. Mizelle was second on the team individually, placing 38th overall with a score of +1 throughout the three rounds.
The Lynchburg men's golf crew has officially kicked off its 2024 fall schedule. Next up for the Hornets is the West Pines Invitational at the West Pines Golf Club, hosted by Oglethorphe. Lynchburg travels down to Douglasville, Ga. for the invitational from Monday, October 7 through Wednesday, October 9.
