Virginia Beach, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey squad earned its 10th straight win with a 5-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday evening.
The No. 13 Hornets (14-2, 7-0) closed out their road slate in the regular season with a solid triumph in which the squad buried the contest in the fourth period, scoring three times in the final 15 minutes. Lynchburg finished the month of October with a perfect record, winning nine games. Throughout the nine-game span, the Hornets allowed just eight goals while scoring a whopping 47 of their own.
Virginia Wesleyan got on the board quick as Landry Meyer scored just 18 seconds into the outing. The Hornets locked in from there, allowing just three shots the rest of the first half and holding the Marlins without a shot in the final 38:07 of action.Â
Freshman
Grace Peterson equalized the score at the 9:24-mark on a solo goal. Lynchburg netted one more before the end of the first half as sophomore
Tatum Humphries capitalized on a penalty shot.
Sophomore
Khanyisile Mzizi extended the Hornets' lead to 3-1 at the 47:25-mark with her fifth goal of the season. Freshman
Maddie Schuchter sealed the affair with back-to-back goals in 41 seconds of game time to end the contest.
Lynchburg and Shenandoah both own a 7-0 record in conference this season and sit at the top two spots in the ODAC standings. The two Hornet squads will square up on the field to close out the regular season on Saturday, November 2 at 1 p.m., which will also serve as the field hockey team's senior day.
