Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg field hockey team is set for its second contest of the NCAA DIII Championships against No. 1 Salisbury on Saturday, November 16 at 11 a.m. in Salisbury, Md.
The Hornets come into the contest riding the momentum of a sensational overtime winner in the first round versus Susquehanna this past Wednesday. Senior
Madison Mark handled a long pass from junior
Megan Stiffler and struck it into the back of the net to equalize the score with 7:34 left in regulation. Sophomore
Khanyisile Mzizi received the rock from a penalty corner, cut by the defender marking her, and slotted it past the keeper to keep Lynchburg's season alive.
The field hockey squad earns a spot in the NCAA second round for the second consecutive season. Last year, the Hornets took down No. 9 York in the round of 16 with a 1-0 victory. In the series between the two sides, Salisbury has taken the last five meetings. The last time Lynchburg met Salisbury on the field was in the NCAA tournament first round in 2021, where the Sea Gulls claimed a 3-2 win in overtime.
This season, Lynchburg has only lost to teams ranked within the top 25 in the nation. Salisbury has dropped just two contests this year against No. 16 Shenandoah and Rowan. These two high-powered squads have impressive defensive units. The Hornets have allowed just 1.5 goals per outing to opponents this season while the Sea Gulls have allowed 14 (.82 per game) this year.
The winner of Saturday's contest will return to the field on Sunday, November 17 at 1 p.m. for the quarterfinal round and face the winner of Christopher Newport and York.
