Men's Basketball Takes On The Pablo Coto Tournament

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team heads to Marymount University in Arlington, Va. for the Pablo Coto Tournament on Saturday, November 23 and Sunday, November 24.

The Hornets (1-1) are set to take on Amherst in the first round of the four-team tournament at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Marymount and Dickinson will also play each other on Saturday. The winners and losers of each game on Saturday will square off against each other on Sunday.

Lynchburg's last time out garnered the fifth-highest point total in a game in program history. The Hornets took down the Warren Wilson Owls, 122-66, and had six performers score in double figures, led by junior guard Piercen Young with a career-high 25 points. Freshman forward Jamarcus Brown (16 points), senior forward Mason Makovec (14), redshirt freshman Cole Callaway (11), sophomore guard Michael Gray (10), and freshman forward Van Nellessen (10) were the other Hornet athletes that finished with double digit points.

In recent history, Lynchburg has matched up against Amherst just once on the hardwood, which was in the Pablo Coto Tournament two years ago. That matchup resulted in a 62-57 victory for the Hornets on Nov. 19, 2022. So far this season, the Mammoths own a 3-1 record and have claimed victory in each of their last two outings against Springfield and Rhode Island. Through three games, Amherst is led offensively by C.J. Mitchell 17.0 points per game.

Marymount comes into the tournament on a three-game winning streak, most recently taking down both Penn State Brandywine and Susquehanna in the Susquehanna Tournament last weekend. Guards Marcus Stubbs and Isaac Harris pace the offense for the Saints with 15.5 and 14.3 points per game, respectively. Dickinson has dropped its first two competitions of the year to Centenary and Eastern. Forward David Petrusev has scored 39 points across the two affairs for an average of 19.5 per game, while grabbing 6.5 boards per contest.

Following this weekend's tournament, the Hornets will return home for a bout against Methodist prior to Thanksgiving on Tuesday, November 26 at 5 p.m.
