Greensboro, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's and women's swimming teams are both in third place after Thursday's events at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championships.
The women trail Roanoke by 35 points, Washington and Lee's women lead the way with 307 points. The men trail Bridgewater by six points while the Generals pace the men's standings with 320 points.
During the preliminary swims in the morning session on Thursday, Lynchburg put up three school records, 12 lifetime-best swims, and 44 season-best swims. The strong showing punched 18 tickets into the finals that night.
Ahmad Woodson was the first individual to get into the pool Thursday night winning the B-final and placing ninth overall in the 500-yard freestyle with a 4:43.90.
In the 200-yard individual medley, freshmen Andrew Fiore and Ryan Bambrick finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Fiore finished just over two-tenths of a second ahead of Bambrick with a 1:56.77. Owen Howery placed 14th after competing in the B-final of the event and posting a 1:57.61.
Three Hornets were in the B-final of the 50-yard freestyle, and Tyler Caten touched the wall first in that heat with a 21.29. Ryan Legge and Wyatt Dacus also competed in the B-final of the 50 free finishing 10th and 12th, respectively. In the A-final, Colton Schnars went down and back in just over 21 seconds, finishing fifth with a 21.05.
On the women's side, Savy Borroughs earned the first individual medal for either squad. In the 50 free, she tied with Roanoke's Lily Mullens for second place with a 23.85 and set a school record. Sophia Schorr and Claire Galloway also swam in the A-final with Borroughs, going 24.56 and 24.76, respectively. Schorr placed sixth, and Galloway finished eighth. In the B-final of the 50 free, Madelyn Foreman went 24.93 and placed 13th.
Molly Spano also set a school record, one she already held, by going 5:10.72 in the 500 free and placing sixth.
Abigail Schneider, Regan Leach, and Delaney Kennedy earned spots in the B-final of the 200 IM, and Schneider earned the best finish from the trio in 10th place. The freshman went 2:12.27, Leach went 2:12.33 in 11th, and Kennedy completed all four strokes in 2:15.92 and finished 14th.
The Hornets added four all-conference relays to their ledger on Thursday beginning with the men's 200-yard freestyle relay. Miles West, Dacus, Caten, and Schnars earned silver with a 1:23.94. The women's relay composed of Galloway, Foreman, Borroughs, and Schorr earned bronze in the same event.
To cap off the evening, Lynchburg's men's 400-yard medley relay placed third with Schnars swimming the backstroke leg, Bambrick performing the breaststroke, West doing the butterfly, and Ryan Legge anchoring with the freestyle. Lindsey Hair, Galloway, Spano, and Borroughs finished second in the 400 medley. Both of the women's relays were program records.
The Hornets are back in the pool on Friday, Feb. 9 for prelims from Greensboro, N.C. starting at 10 a.m. Finals commence for Day 3 at 6 p.m.
