Greensboro, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg women's swimming graduate student Claire Galloway earned an NCAA B-cut on her way to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in the 100-yard breaststroke on Friday.
Galloway actually earned her B-cut twice over, going 1:03.61 in prelims Friday morning for a school-record. In the finals session that night, she won the 100 breast and doubled down on a B-cut with a 1:03.92.
It was not Galloway's only ODAC championship swim that night or even her only B-cut in her career. She is the only Lynchburg women's swimmer to earn a B-cut, and now she has two, pairing her school record Friday with another B-cut in the 100 breast back in 2020.
Galloway swam the breaststroke leg in the 200-yard medley relay to kick off the evening. Along with Lindsey Hair, Molly Spano, and Savy Borroughs, the Hornets won the event with a school-record 1:46.09.
Abigail Schneider also competed in the A-final of the 100 breast and finished sixth with a 1:07.56. Sophia Schorr represented Lynchburg in the B-final of the event and placed 10th with a 1:08.47.
Spano joined Galloway as the only Hornets that night to earn a relay and an individual championship after she won the 400-yard IM going 4:34.25. The Hornets also packed five swimmers into the B-final of the 400 IM as Delaney Kennedy, Sarah Phipps, Savannah Solenberger, and Caroline Inskeep finished 10th-13th, and Caitlyn Moore placed 16th.
Regan Leach and Madelyn Foreman placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly. Solenberger and Charlotte Grieve placed 10th and 11th in the B-final.
Hair placed 16th in the 200-yard freestyle and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke. Moore, Brynn Dyer, and Borroughs competed in the 100 back B-final as well.
On the men's side, Lynchburg's 200 medley relay got on the podium with a bronze medal after Colton Schnars, Ryan Bambrick, Miles West, and Tyler Caten put up a 1:32.63.
Andrew Fiore and Erik Witt earned spots in the 400-yard individual medley finals. Fiore placed seventh in the A-final, and Witt came in 14th in the B-final.
Miles West set a school record in the 100 fly going 50.52 and placing fourth. Ben Myers was in the B-final and came in 15th.
Ryan Legge, Wyatt Dacus, Ahmad Woodson, and Tobey Lima finished 11th-14th in the B-final of the 200 free.
Bambrick got on the podium with a fourth-place finish and a 57.95 in the 100 breast, and Miles Fitzgerald and Owen Howery caught 10th and 12th place in the B-final, respectively.
Four men scored for the Hornets in the 100 back, just like on the women's side, as Schnars, West, Maximo Jacquet, and Caten were in the A-final. Schnars earned silver, West landed a bronze medal, Jacquet came in fifth, and Caten finished eighth.
To set up the successful evening for Lynchburg, the Hornets swam 48 season-bests, 16 lifetime-bests, and saw two school records fall during the prelims session Friday.
After all the impressive performances, three golds, and a B-cut, the men and women are both still in third place of their respective championship meets. The men closed the gap by a point on Bridgewater and have 337 points. The women trail Roanoke by 23 and have totaled 367.5 points so far. Washington and Lee lead both championships as the men have 642 points, and the women have 593.
One more day of competition stands in the way of crowning a men's and women's conference champion. Prelims start at 10 a.m. again on Saturday, Feb. 10, and finals will begin an hour early at 5 p.m. that night.
