No. 4 men's golf ties for eighth in first tournament of 2024

Savannah, Ga. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team tied for eighth at the Savannah Invitational to kick off its 2024 slate of tournaments. 

Lynchburg entered the tournament as the fourth-ranked team in Division III. The Hornets shot +8 as a unit with scores of 287, 286, and 299 for a cumulative 872. They tied with Kenyon College which moved up two spots into the tie for eighth while the Hornets fell three spots during the final day of play. 

Andrew Watson (71-71-76--218) and Simon Burgos (72-71-75--218) tied for 28th. Both players shot -1 in Round 2 which was split up between Monday and Tuesday. The Hornets were scheduled to play two full rounds on Monday, but Round 2 was suspended due to darkness Monday night. The Hornets shot 286 in that split Round 2 which was their lowest of the tournament. 

Eddie Coffren V (74-73-73--220) tied with Harrison Smith (70-74-76--220) in 36th. Smith had the low round of the tournament for the Hornets on Monday in Round 1 with a 70. He made three birdies in Round 1 and was in a tie for 10th after 18 holes. 

Ben Chamberlin (77-71-75--223) tied for 54th. He made 10 birdies over the two days of play.

The Hornets played well as a squad on the par-3s and par-4s going a combined +11 on those layouts. The Hornets also made the third-most pars in the tournament with 180 but had the fourth-highest score on the par-5s.

Lynchburg beat out three Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams in the standings pacing Hampden-Sydney, Guilford, and Averett. Washington and Lee placed third with an 847 as a team beating Lynchburg by 25 strokes. 

The Hornets travel to Southern Pines, N.C. for three rounds of golf at the Forest Creek Invitational beginning Sunday, March 10.
