Williamsburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team is in first place at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship after Round 1 Sunday.
Simon Burgos and Harrison Smith both carded 73s (+1) on the par-72, 6,981-yard course at the Golden Horseshoe. The sophomore-senior duo combined for eight birdies. Smith made four of his five birdies on the front-9. Burgos and Smith are tied for fourth place.
Two more Hornets fit into the top-20 with Andrew Watson in a tie for 14th at 75, and Alan Van Asch tied for 18th at 76. Eddie Coffren V is in 43rd after shooting an 82.
The Hornets are three strokes ahead of second-place Washington and Lee and Guilford. The Hornets fired a 297 as a team Sunday, and Round 2 begins on Monday, April 29 at 8 a.m. Coffren V will be the first Hornet on the tee box at 10:30 a.m.
