Camp Lejeune, N.C. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team placed second out of 20 teams at the 51st Camp Lejeune Championship on Sunday posting a total score of 875 after rounds of 299, 286, and 290.
The Hornets were in a tie for fifth after the action Friday. Eddie Coffren V (73-71-72--216) and Ban Chamberlin (73-77-74--224) were tied for 12th after Friday's 18.
The Hornets posted their best round on Saturday with a 286 and moved up two spots into third. Coffren V shot -1 and thrust himself up the leaderboard into seventh. Harrison Smith (78-68-76--222) had the best round of the tournament from any Hornet and fired a 68 (-4). Smith made par or better on every hole including two birdies and an eagle on par-5 18th. He was one of 19 players in the 100-player field to make an eagle.
The Hornets shot four strokes higher on Sunday than they did Saturday, but the squad's 290 was the lowest total of the final round which moved Lynchburg into second place. It is Lynchburg's best finish in a tournament since winning the Shenandoah Invitational in March 2019.
Coffren V fired a 72 Sunday, finishing even-par and in sixth place. It's his fifth top-10 finish of the season and first of the spring. Alan Van Asch (75-74-72--221) also was even on the day Sunday and tied for 14th. Smith tied for 16th, Andrew Watson (78-73-72--223) tied for 20th, and Chamberlin tied for 25th.
Lynchburg made the most pars in the field over the three days, made 42 birdies, and had the second-best score as a team on the par-4s averaging 4.12.
Lynchburg is the sixth-ranked team in Division III and gets three weeks off before teeing it up at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship beginning Sunday, April 28 in Williamsburg, Va.
