Boulder City, Nev. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team is in fifth place after Round 1 at the NCAA 2024 Division III men's golf championship.
The Hornets played their first round at the NCAA championship in 35 years after winning the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship in late April. The national championship is being played on two courses: Boulder Creek Golf Club and The Legacy Golf Club. The Hornets shot -7 as a team on the former, led by a 67 (-5) from Eddie Coffren V. The junior and two-time ODAC golfer of the year is in a tie for sixth place out of 221 players after making eight birdies. The Hornets made 20 birdies as a team on Tuesday which is the sixth-most in the field.
Simon Burgos shot even-par on the par-72, 7,377 layout at Boulder Creek. He is in a tie for 46th and made an eagle on 16. Alan Van Asch joined Coffren V under par and in the top-15 after firing a 69 (-3). He is in a tie for 14th. Andrew Watson birdied his first hole of the day, went on to make four more, and is in a tie for 62nd after shooting a 73 (+1). Harrison Smith shot an 83 to round out Lynchburg's opening round at the national championship.
The top-18 teams make the cut after play Wednesday and earn the right to stay in Las Vegas and play two more rounds competing for a national title. Lynchburg's ODAC counterpart in the tournament, Washington and Lee, is in a tie for 11th, eight strokes behind the Hornets. W&L freshman Jonathan McEwen is in second place after shooting a 65 (-7).
The Hornets tee off at 3:50 p.m. eastern, 12:50 p.m. pacific with Smith going off the first hole at The Legacy Golf Club along with Bethel University and Husson University.
