Boulder City, Nev. --- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team continued it strong play after making the cut during Round 3 at the NCAA 2024 Division III men's golf championship Thursday.
Eddie Coffren V, who each were named Ping All-Region IV earlier on Thursday tied with Washington and Lee's top player for the ODAC-best round of the day with 70 (-2). Coffren V is tied for 14th with six other players at 3-under 213 (67-76-70) following a third round that featured three birdies.
While the first two rounds of the championship were competed over two courses to accommodate the large field of athletes, all teams and players that made the 36-hole cut took solely to the grounds at Boulder Creek Golf Club. Boulder Creek plays to a par of 72 at 7,377 yards.
The five players on Lynchburg's squad each registered sub-80 rounds on Thursday. Alan Van Asch posted his second under-par round at 71 to tie for 32nd overall at even-par 216 (69-76-71). Andrew Watson matched his first day score with a 1-over 73 to tie him for 63rd at 6-over 222 (73-76-73). Simon Burgos and Harrison Smith each posted rounds of 4-over 76. Burgos is tied for 60th at 5-over 221 (72-73-76) and Smith is 94th at 25-over 241 (83-82-76).
Carnegie Mellon University posted an 8-under 288 to jump three spots and take a one stroke lead over Methodist University (271-295-284) and the University of Redlands (275-288-287) at 15-under 849 (282-287-280).
Huntingdon College's Brett Viator (69-74-64) carded the round of the tournament thus far with an 8-under 64. That moved him up 19 spots into a tie for the lead with 36-hole chart topper Michael O'Sullivan (66-70-71) from Oglethorpe University at 9-under 207.
Competition concludes on Friday, May 17 with the final 18 holes of the championship.
