Lynchburg, Va. - - The University of Lynchburg women's tennis team opened their fall competition at the Randolph Invite on Saturday. They competed against players from Shenandoah, Bridgewater, and Randolph.
Lynchburg opened the 9 a.m. doubles round with a 2-1 record. Junior Ashley Hair and freshman Kayla Kosiorek fought to a 7-5 victory over Bridgewater's Jolexie Whetzel and Sarah Slagle. The freshman duo of Madison Sked and Harper Dodd breadsticked Shenandoah's Allison Cherwien and Leigha Montrief. Sophomore Elizabeth Horine and junior Reese McAtee fell 4-6 to Shenandoah's Kenda Gillette and Madison Shawver.
In the next hour, Lynchburg went an even 2-2 in doubles action. Hair and Kosiorek fell 4-6 to Shenandoah's Spruill and Guzzo. Sked and Dodd defeated Shenandoah's Hatseras and Talko to finish undefeated in doubles play. Horine and McAtee captured their first win of the day, beating Randolph's Mills and Cabrera 6-2. Graduate student Emily Wrenn and sophomore Myah Forest fell to Bridgewater's Wichael and Doyne 2-6.
In the first round of singles action, Hair won against Bridgewater's Slagle in a three-set tiebreak 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4). Kosiorek cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Bridgewater's Whetzel. McAtee won her singles match against Bridgewater's Cabrill 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Kamerin East fell 2-6, 0-6 to Randolph's Cabrera. Lynchburg finished the first round of singles play with a 3-1 record.
In the final round of singles action, Sked fell to Shenandoah's Cherwien 6-7 (4-7), 2-6, Hornine fell to Shenandoah's Montrief 2-6, 3-6, and sophomore Sarah Wood fell to Shenandoah's Shawver 4-6, 0-6. Dodd defeated Bridgewater's Doyne 6-2, 6-2 to stay undefeated through the invitational, and give Lynchburg their final win of the day. Lynchburg went 1-3 in the final singles round of the day, and finished the invitational with an 8-7 record, good for the third best from the invitational.
The next competition in the fall season for the Hornets is the ITA Regional, beginning on Saturday, Sept. 21.
