Women's Tennis Records Seven Wins at ITA Southeast Regional

Fredericksburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg women's tennis program performed well at the ITA Division III Southeast Regional hosted by Mary Washinton this past weekend. Overall, the Hornets concluded with a match record of 5-2 in singles and 2-3 in doubles.

Four Hornet performers represented Lynchburg well against players from across the region at the 2024 ITA DIII Southeast Regional. The Hornets amassed seven victories over the weekend, highlighted by freshman Kayla Kosiorek's run to the Blue 3 bracket finals.

The Hornets dropped both of their doubles matches on Saturday morning to Catholic's top two doubles teams last season. Freshmen Harper Dodd and Madison Sked took their first loss as a doubles team of the fall season to Paige Brightwell and Meaghan Laniewski 2-8. Kosiorek and junior Ashley Hair fell 5-8 to Mairead O'Hara and Ava Niggemeier.

In singles action, Hair was the lone Hornet in the Blue 2 bracket. In her first singles match of the day, she defeated Salisbury's Elizabeth Coligan 6-2, 6-0. She later faced Swathmore's Madeline Posner and fell 3-6, 0-6. In the Blue 3 bracket, Sked fell to Stevens' Gigi Arenas 4-6, 2-6. Kosiorek captured a 6-1, 7-5 win against Mary Washington's Madison McCarty. Later that evening, she wrapped up the first day of regional competition for the Hornets, winning a hard fought battle against Salisbury's Ridgley Lake 6-3, 2-6, 10-4.

Sunday morning, Dodd and Sked received two byes in the consolation bracket. They fell 3-8 to Stevens' Arenas and Wei Wei Lai. Hair and Kosiorek breadsticked Roanoke's Julia Bassett and Victoria Rios to begin their morning. They received a bye in the quarterfinals, and defeated Lebanon Valley's duo of Erika Badner and Katherine Berra 8-4 in the semifinals. In singles action, Sked played an eight-game pro set against Salisbury's Katherine Raab in the consolation bracket, and won 8-2. Kosiorek continued her run and defeated Washington College's Sofia Sperandei 7-5, 0-6, 10-7 to advance to the finals. Kosiorek was leading Christopher Newport's Erin Gross 3-0 before retiring due to stiffness.

The Hornets finished their 2024 fall slate strong with their performance at the ITA Regional. Their 2025 spring regular season schedule will be announced at a later date. To view results from the ITA competition, click here.
