Swimming Shows Out At ODAC Relays

Lexington, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's and women's swim teams had impressive showings at the ODAC Relays hosted by Washington and Lee on Saturday as the men's team placed second out of eight teams and the women placed third out of 10 teams.

"We're really excited about where we are right now," said director of men's and women's swimming Brad Dunn. "We are performing and training as if we're at the midseason point, and we're only three weeks into practice. I think that is a testament to our great senior leaders on the team, but we also have really hungry newcomers that are excited to compete and train. The way we are swimming right now is as if we are in midseason form, and to do that back-to-back [after an exhibition meet at Liberty yesterday] was really impressive to me."

On the men's side, the Hornets improved on their performance from last season's ODAC relays. Last year, the men's squad placed fourth. This year, the crew earned 280 points to place second. Sophomore Maximo Jacquet headlined the Lynchburg performances with an unofficial program record in the IM. Freshman Andrew Neculai was a standout performer in the relays, helping the unit earn first in the 400 freestyle relay and third in the 500-yard 50-100-150-200 relay. Graduate Will Kasemeyer was a significant piece in the team earning third place for the 100 freestyle relay and fifth in the 3x50-yard backstroke, 400 freestyle, 200 medley, and 200 freestyle relays.

The women's team had a standout performance in the 3x100 IM relay. Junior Regan Leach, freshman Eliza Fleenor and sophomore Abigail Schneider each played consequential roles in the team placing third for the relay. Freshman Sienna Schmeck produced some of the fastest times in the meet, helping the crew earn second place in the 100 freestyle, 200 IM and 200 freestyle. The other two performances that Schmeck took part in resulted in top-five finishes for the Hornets as well. Senior Savy Borroughs played an important part in the three second-place finishes with Schmeck while also helping the team place third in the 50-100-150-200 relay and fourth in the 400 freestyle.

Prior to the ODAC relays, the swim team matched up with Liberty for an exhibition on Friday, September 27. The Hornets had a strong showing at that competition as well, especially in the men's 200 butterfly, where the team took all of the top-three spots. The crew also placed first in the men's 4x50 relay, men's 100 backstroke, and men's 100 butterfly. To see the complete list of the final results from Friday, click here.

The Hornets have a nearly month-long break in the schedule before their first official dual meet. Lynchburg is set to host Roanoke on Friday, October 25 at 6 p.m.
