Lynchburg Set For Road Showdown At Shenandoah

Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's basketball team continues its road stand with a matchup against Shenandoah on Saturday, January 11 at 4:30 p.m.

The Hornets (8-5, 2-2) are coming off of a narrow victory against Eastern Mennonite earlier this week. Lynchburg held off a second-half comeback effort to claim a 79-78 win. Four of the Hornets' five starters scored in double-digits, led by sophomore guard Michael Gray with 20 points, his second time this season scoring 20-or-more and fifth consecutive game scoring in double-figures. Freshman forward Jamarcus Brown tallied 17 points, seven boards two steals and one assist. Senior forward Jonathan Foust and junior guard Piercen Young had 13 and 12 points, respectively, to round out Lynchburg players with over 10 points.

Since 1989, Lynchburg owns a 16-5 advantage in the series with Shenandoah. The Hornets have won seven of the last nine meetings with SU, including seven straight from 2018 through 2022. The last competition between the two squads was in the first round of the ODAC postseason, which resulted in a 71-65 Shenandoah win.

Through 13 games this season, Young leads the squad in scoring with an average of 12.2 points per game, followed by Brown with 12.0 point per affair. Sophomore guard tops the team in assists this season with 54 dimes for an average of 4.2 per game, the fourth best mark in the ODAC. As a group, the Hornets have been strong in the paint with the second-most rebounds per outing this season at 40.2 per contest. Exerting force on the glass will be a key to claim victory for Lynchburg.

Shenandoah has four performers who average double-digits this season: junior backcourt duo Joshua Stephen (13.6 points per game) and Dorian Davis (12.3 ppg.), sophomore forward Joseph Baldwin (11.6 ppg.) and freshman guard Shamir Taylor (10.1 ppg.). Stephen is eighth in the conference in steals per game with 1.6 steals per game and leads the team in assists with 31.

Following Saturday's matchup, Lynchburg will return to the home court to square off against Roanoke on Wednesday, January 15 at 7:30 p.m.
