Lynchburg, Va. -- The Lynchburg Hornets suffered their first home loss of the season, falling to Hampden-Sydney 78-67.
The Hornets jumped out to an early advantage, leading through the first 13 minutes of the contest.
Cole Callaway led the way early with a handful of three-pointers. The redshirt freshman finished with a team-leading 14 points and four three-pointers.
In the final stages of the first half, the Tigers slowly began to pull away. After a 12-4 run that tied the game with six minutes to go, Hampton-Sydney continued to disrupt the Hornet offense, playing without three of their five leading scores.
After heading to the locker room with a seven-point deficit, the Tigers turned up the heat once again to start the second half. While leading scorer Adam Brazil was limited offensively, finishing with 12 points, the Tigers scored by committee. Three players finished with 12 points, and 10 of 11 players found the bottom of the net.
Turnovers proved to be an issue for both teams, each finishing with 17. Hampden-Sydney averaged 9.8 turnovers per game, 12th in Division III.Their total in Turner set a new season-high.
Nonetheless, the Hornets walked away with bright sports, especially from the front court. Freshman
Jamarcus Brown finished with six points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
John Henderson recorded 13 points and five rebounds.
Jonathan Foust and
Elijah Thomas both collected eight points, and Thomas made his first two threes of the season.
Lynchburg falls to 7-5 (1-2) on the season with a two-game road stint ahead. The Hornets will face EMU on the road this Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 7 p.m.
