Winchester, Va. --Â The Lynchburg Hornets claimed a crucial conference win over the Shenandoah Hornets, 2-1, to remain unbeaten in ODAC play.
Senior forward Danielle Coon led the way offensively for Lynchburg (9-3), scoring both goals in the contest. It marked the second time this season that Coon has recorded a multi-goal performance.
Shenandoah (9-3) took the lead early in the first half. After recording just one shot in the opening frame, the Hornets responded with seven in the second quarter — six of which were on target. Mallory Holup netted the game's first goal in the second quarter to give Shenandoah a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half, Lynchburg's offense ramped up the pressure. The Hornets fired off six shots, one of which resulted in the equalizer. After driving into the circle, Daniell Coon worked from left to right inside the arc and fired a shot that slipped through to even the score midway through the third quarter.
The two sides remained deadlocked for the next 20 minutes until Coon struck again. With under two minutes remaining, she carved her way into the circle once more and lifted the ball over the outstretched leg of Shenandoah's goalkeeper to give Lynchburg its first lead of the day.
Lynchburg held firm for the remainder of the game, turning away a late Shenandoah penalty corner to secure the 2-1 victory. Junior goalkeeper Shay Schoones notched her second-most saves in a game this season with eight.
The Hornets return home for their next matchup against Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, Oct. 15, for a Code Red contest.
