Glassboro, N.J. --The University of Lynchburg field hockey team dropped a top-20 matchup on the road to the Rowan Profs, 4-3, in overtime.
The Hornets (7-3) suffered their third loss of the season, all of which have come at the hands of ranked opponents away from home.
Lynchburg took control in the opening frame, capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity. A shot from Khanyisile Mzizi deflected off the goalkeeper and onto the stick of Fenna den Bieman, who punched it through for the early 1-0 advantage.
Anna Dorrestijn added to the Lynchburg total early in the second quarter, scoring on a breakaway kick-started by a Danielle Coon outlet pass. Nevertheless, the Profs answered with two quick goals to even the affair. As a tie was looming before the intermission, Saar Prins beat the buzzer with a last-second backhand goal to put Lynchburg back out in front, 3-2.
After an explosive first half, the final 30 minutes proved to be a defensive battle. Rowan began to slow down the Lynchburg attack, holding the Hornets to just one shot in the third quarter. But five Rowan shots on goal ultimately led to the equalizer, setting the stage for an exciting finish.
The two sides combined for just two shots in the fourth quarter after totaling 22 in the first three. While Lynchburg put both of its chances on target, neither got past the goalkeeper, sending the Hornets into their first overtime game of the season. The Profs went on to score the game-winner off a penalty corner in the 62nd minute.
Lynchburg remains on the road for its next two matchups, beginning Wednesday, Oct. 8, at Sweet Briar.
