Men's Hoops Escapes With 78-76 Win

Lynchburg, Va. -- The Hornets men's basketball squad picked up their second win this week in a 78-76 contest against Shenandoah.

Michael Gray led all scorers, finishing with 18 points to go along with his eight rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jonathan Foust recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Piercen Young also contributed 14 points, including the ultimate game-winning go-ahead bucket.

While Lynchburg struggled from three in the first half, that was seemingly the only area of concern through the first 20 minutes. At the intermission, Lynchburg shot 43% from the floor, out-rebounded Shenandoah 23-13, and won the turnover battle 5-9. In the opening minutes of the second frame, Lynchburg offered more of the same.

At the 12 minute mark in the second half, the Lynchburg lead had ballooned up to 20 points, their largest of the day. Nevertheless, Shenandoah soon began to string together defensive stops and work their way back into the ball game.

The backcourt tandem of Dorian Davis and Davion Roberts found their rhythm in the second half and went on to combine for 25 points and five steals.

As the second half progressed, the Lynchburg lead slowly began to dwindle. Following an and-one finish at the rim by Roberts, the score was tied at 76 with 19 seconds remaining.

With the game on the line, Lynchburg put their trust in the hands of Young, fresh off a career-high 27 points the previous game. Young, guarded by Davis, stepped back on the right wing, and cashed in on a long two to take the lead with 4.7 remaining.

With a chance for one shot to either send it to OT or walk away with the win, Shenandoah fed Joseph Baldwin looking to tie. But Freshman forward Jamarcus Brown disrupted the attempt, claiming his second block of the day, helping the Hornets capture the win.

Lynchburg will now have a wee-long hiatus before returning to the floor for the next game. The Hornets will host #7 Randolph-Macon next Saturday, Feb. 15.
