Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's golf team took home the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship title for the second consecutive year and eighth time in program history on Wednesday afternoon.
The nationally ranked No. 8 Hornets are now the back-to-back conference champions. Last year, the Hornets took home the title for the first time since 1989, beating out runner-up Hampden-Sydney by 15 strokes.Â
This year, Lynchburg snagged the trophy and defeated the top-ranked team in NCAA DIII in the country in Washington and Lee by 10 strokes. The Hornets finished the three-day competition with a -5 total (287, 290, 282 -- 859) and was the only team to finish the event under par. As a squad, Lynchburg had the best performances in both rounds one and two, and closed out the tournament with the second best team score in the final round.
After day one, Lynchburg finished one under par and was eight strokes ahead of any other team in the pack. Three Hornet performers finished the first 18 holes at -1. In round two, Lynchburg continued with its consistently solid performance with a +2 finish on the round, led by
Eddie Coffren V with a -2.
Cooper Mizelle and
Alan Van Asch each had eagles on holes 16 and 18, respectively.
Prior to the start of the final round, Lynchburg owned a 15-stroke advantage to second-place finisher Washington and Lee. After nine holes, the Generals closed the gap to just six strokes with a +6 team score. Following the 11th hole, the Hornets held a slight two-stroke edge. On holes 12-18, Lynchburg got back nine strokes and had three performers birdie hole 18 to seal the victory.Â
Mizelle paced the Hornets with his best collegiate performance, finishing second overall individually with a final of six under par. After finishing the first round one under and the second round one over, Mizelle had the best individual performance of the day in the third round by finishing -6 with six birdies and no bogies.
Coffren followed right behind Mizelle, finishing third overall in the tournament with a score of -4 over the three days. He was impressively consistent, finishing one under in the first and third rounds, and two under in the second round.Â
Simon Burgos was the next top finisher for the Hornets, checking in at 14th overall with a +6 final score. He finished each round at +1, +2, and +3, respectively.
Joey Easmeil and
Alan Van Asch each finished inside the top 30. Easmeil concluded the tournament at 24th overall with a total of nine over par (-1, +8, +2) while Van Asch finished the competition at 28th overall with a score of +11 (+10, +2, -1).
Along with an ODAC title, four Lynchburg student-athletes landed spots on All-ODAC teams.
Eddie Coffren V was selected to the All-ODAC First Team as the 10th-best collegiate golfer in the country for DIII.
Alan Van Asch earned a place on the All-ODAC Second Team and finished the season with an average score of under 75. Both
Simon Burgos and
Cooper Mizelle snagged spots on the All-ODAC Third Team.
Lynchburg has clinch an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championships in Rochester, N.Y., which was take place from Tuesday, May 20 through Friday, May 23.
