Forest, Va. -- Following a two-goal performance and allowing just two shots on goal against conference foe Randolph-Macon,
William Casey of the University of Lynchburg men's soccer team was appointed the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Monday.
Casey and the Hornets achieved two victories this past week, a 4-1 win against Franklin and Marshall and a 2-1 triumph at Randolph-Macon. With his solid overall performance, the sophomore earned his first ODAC Player of the Week nod of his collegiate career.
Against the Diplomats, Casey netted two goals for a career-best offensive outing. On his first goal of the outing, a deflection shortly after a corner found Casey's feet, and he fired a right-footed low ball into the far corner, putting the Hornets ahead, 2-1. His second score came just four minutes later as
Matthew Viscuso handled a set piece from the left side of the field near the top corner of the box and sent it to a leaping Casey, who finished it with force into the close top corner.
In that contest against Franklin and Marshall, the Lynchburg defensive unit allowed just one shot in the second half. Against ODAC rival Randolph-Macon, Casey contributed to a solid defensive showing that only allowed one goal on a penalty kick to the Yellow Jackets. Though RMC got off 14 total shots, just two landed on frame, the penalty shot and one additional shot from Tyler Oakes.
The 2024 ODAC Rookie of the Year claims the men's soccer team's first ODAC Player of the Week award in 2025. Next on the schedule for the Hornets is a Hill City clash against Randolph at Shellenberger Field on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
