Indoor Track Returns Home to Compete at Liberty Open

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg indoor track & field teams aim to build off their early-season momentum as they compete in the Liberty Open, hosted by Liberty University, on Friday, Jan. 23.

Originally scheduled as a two-day event, the meet will be consolidated into one day to avoid heavy snowfall predicted around the region on Saturday. This weekend's competition marks Lynchburg's third meet at Liberty University out of four, as the Hornets will return in February for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational.

Meet Schedule

On the updated schedule, field events are slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. with the women's shot put. Running events commence around the oval with the men's 5,000m run at 9:00 a.m., and the action is expected to conclude following the women's unseeded 3,000m run at 7:40 p.m.

Facility

The Liberty Indoor Track Complex features six lanes around the 200m banked track, with a capacity of over 2,500 spectators. The facility opened for competition in January 2017, and each indoor season, Lynchburg hosts The Burg Open at Liberty to open the new year.

Twice as Nice

At last weekend's Finn Pincus Invitational, a pair of Hornets produced indoor program records within a 30-minute span. Rylee Turner clocked 42.03 in the women's 300m, while Parker Marshall earned a 1:23.73 finish in the men's 600m.

The two program-best marks raise the season total to three, as Kaitlyn Ruiz posted a historic 1:17.81 500m performance in early December.

Leapin' Leech

Micah Leech continued his stellar indoor campaign with a pair of personal-best results in the men's long jump and triple jump. The junior set a 23' 6¼" (7.17m) mark in the long jump to finish first in the event, catapulting to 11th on the Division III qualifying list for the NCAA Indoor Championships. The top 20 performances will advance to the championships.

With his new PR, Leech occupies third in program history for the men's indoor long jump. He was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week following his performance at Roanoke.
