Lynchburg, Va. -- The University of Lynchburg men's and women's swim teams showed out for senior night, earning wins across the board against Liberty and Southern Virginia in the Battle of the Burg on Friday night at the Liberty Natatorium.
The men's squad claimed wins over Liberty (154-108) and Southern Virginia (209-44) while the women's group took down Southern Virginia, 179-76. The meet opened with the women's 200-yard medley relay, where Lynchburg swept the top two spots.
The A relay of
Abigail Schneider,
Gracie Maughan,
Regan Leach, and
Sophia Schorr touched first in 1:51.84, followed closely by the B relay of
Eliza Fleenor,
Kailen Craddock,
Sophia DaCruz, and
Sienna Schmeck in 1:54.96. On the men's side, Lynchburg also claimed the top position in the 200-yard medley relay, as
Henry Brooks,
Ryan Bambrick,
Owen Howery, and
Tyler Caten finished in 1:36.74, setting an early tone for the evening.
Distance events proved to be a major strength.
Lilly Pifer won the women's 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:09.58, while
Charlotte Grieve added another strong finish in second.
Jackson Holsten dominated the men's 1000-yard freestyle, winning decisively in 9:47.01, with
Adam Fisher also contributing a solid performance for the Hornets. Holsten later followed up with top finishes in the 100-yard and 200-yard breastroke events.
In the middle-distance and sprint events, Lynchburg continued to rack up victories. Schmeck won the women's 100-yard backstroke, and Maughan captured first place in the women's 100-yard breaststroke.
Charlotte Grieve led a Lynchburg sweep of the top two spots in the women's 200-yard butterfly, with
Lindsay Hanks finishing second.
Connor Marshall earned a win in the men's 200-yard butterfly, while
Sophia Schorr and
Sydney Weeks went one-two in the women's 50-yard freestyle.
Brooks led the way in the 50-yard freestyle as Lynchburg took all three of the top spots in the event. Schmeck earned another victory in the 100-yard freestyle, then Franco Gastaldi Fossat took first on the men's side in the 100-yard freestyle. Brooks came back shortly thereafter for the 200-yard backstroke and touched first in 1:57.20.
Sydney Weeks paced the competition in the 500-yard freestyle, while Maughan and Fleenor followed behind in second and third, respectively. Pifer got another first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly, followed closely behind by Grieve who placed second.
The Hornets closed the meet with strong efforts in the individual medley events and the freestyle relays.
Abigail Schneider won the women's 400-yard IM in 4:52.29, while
Logan Page claimed the men's 400-yard IM title in 4:12.89. Then, Lynchburg's A relays won both the men's and women's 200-yard freestyle events to finish the night.Â
Next up for the Hornets are the ODAC Championships, taking place in Greensboro, N.C. from Wednesday, Feb. 11 through Saturday, Feb. 14.
