Easton & Brown Combine for 54 in Lynchburg Win Over Hampden-Sydney

LYNCHBURG.Va. -- The Lynchburg Hornets frontcourt tandem of sophomore Jamarcus Brown and senior Jayson Easton erupted for a combined 54 points in a 77-67 ODAC win over Hampden-Sydney.

After scoring a career-best 36 points last game against Averett (2/4), Brown notched his second 30-point outing on an efficient 12-16 shooting from the field. The Danville, Va. native added seven boards, two blocks, and two steals to round out his dominant performance.

Easton continued his dominant stretch from the perimeter, connecting on five three-pointers for the third time in five games. The senior marksman tied a career-high in points and steals, dropping 24 and collecting three takeaways on the defensive end.

The Hornets began the affair with blistering success on both ends of the floor. Junior guard Jesse Mitchell got the offense rolling from the opening tip-off with five Lynchburg points amidst a 12-3 run from tip-off.

Lynchburg stayed in the driver's seat and continued to control the pace of play, outscoring the Tigers 37-21 and leading by as many as 22 points in the first 20 minutes. The Hornets went to the locker room shooting 55.2% from the floor, while holding Hampden-Sydney to a 19.4% clip with just six made shots.

In the second half, Lynchburg continued to coast with the advantage majority of the way, trading buckets with the Tigers. Nevertheless, late pressure applied by the Hampden-Sydney defense with a full-court press brought them back within striking distance. A 22-point advantage shrunk to six points with under two minutes remaining, but quality free throw shooting by the Hornets kept Hampden-Sydney at bay.

Lynchburg has now won four of their past five games and finds themselves getting hot at the right time. With three games remaining, Lynchburg will battle for playoff positioning, starting with a bout against Eastern Mennonite on Saturday, Feb. 14.
