Indoor Track Sends Athletes to Virginia Tech and South Carolina

Lynchburg, Va. – The University of Lynchburg indoor track & field teams aim to improve their national positioning as eight athletes prepare to compete on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7 at Virginia Tech's Doc Hale Invite and the Carolina Classic, hosted by the University of South Carolina.

While several Hornets will rest this weekend, the Division I meets will provide an opportunity for Lynchburg's field athletes and multi-event competitors to register strong marks. In addition, the women's 4x400m team will aim to enter the national qualifying list on Saturday at Virginia Tech.

Facilities

The Hornets return to Virginia Tech's Rector Field House for the second time this season after participating in the Virginia Tech Invitational in January. The facility features a six-lane, 200-meter banked oval with a Mondo surface.

The Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex in Columbia, S.C. features a similar layout and track design, although Lynchburg's athletes will only participate in the high jump at the event. The complex was opened in 2019.

Doc Hale Invite (Blacksburg, Va.)

On Friday, Micah Leech opens this weekend's action in the men's heptathlon. The event will commence with the men's 60-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m.

Leech's current mark of 4,975 occupies fourth on the Division III indoor qualifying list, including second place on the program's all-time list behind Joe Bedard's 5,527.

Margo Fox will compete in her first women's pentathlon of the indoor season on Friday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Fox owns a personal best of 3,294 from last indoor season's South Region Final Qualifier, where she claimed the school record.

Demetri Hinton will compete in the men's triple jump at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, looking to improve his 27th-place mark in DIII (46' 7¼" or 14.20m)

Lastly, the women's 4x400m team will prepare for liftoff at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, featuring Madelyn Boyce, Hannah Edwards, Kaitlyn Ruiz and Rylee Turner.

Carolina Classic (Columbia, S.C.)

Lamont Victoria and Aidan Hipp compete in the men's high jump on Saturday at South Carolina in a field of 17 athletes. The event will begin after the conclusion of the women's high jump, which kicks off at 10:30 a.m.

Victoria secured the second-best performance in DIII and matched the program record with a 6' 10 ¾" (2.10m) mark at the Liberty Open. Hipp sits 37th in DIII with a 6' 6¼" (1.99m) performance from the Roanoke Bast-Cregger Invitational.
