SALISBURY, Md. -- The University of Lynchburg softball team concluded weekend slate of six games across three days at the Margie Knight Softball Classic with an 0-8 loss to New Paltz and a 3-2 victory over Manhattanville. All together, finishing the weekend with a 3-3 split.
New Paltz 8, Lynchburg 0
Lynchburg opened Sunday with an 8-0 loss to New Paltz.
The game remained scoreless through the first two innings before the Hawks broke through with a four-run third inning. New Paltz added another run in the fifth and scored three more in the seventh to secure the win.
The Hornets were limited to three hits in the contest, coming from Helen Maddux, Hailey Schildt, and Alex Love.
Lynchburg 3, Manhattanville 2
Lynchburg closed the weekend with a narrow 3-2 victory over Manhattanville.
The Hornets took the early lead in the second inning when Schildt drew a walk and later scored on an RBI single from Sydney Bryant.
Lynchburg added another run in the fourth when Alex Love reached on a single and eventually scored on a Manhattanville error to extend the lead to 2-0.
Manhattanville responded in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game on a two-run double from Alexa Lazur.
The Hornets regained the lead in the fifth inning. Layla Lietzan reached on an error and later scored when Sarah Watts reached on another defensive miscue, putting Lynchburg ahead 3-2.
Kate Charlton shut the door from there, tossing a complete game and allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out two.
Talayumptewa paced the offense with three hits, while Bryant drove in the Hornets' first run of the game.
