Box Score Ashland, Va. -- The Field Hockey team maintained their grasp on first-place in the ODAC with a convincing win over Randolph-Macon, 6-0 on Friday evening.
The Hornets entered the day atop the ODAC standings and with their second straight victory stayed above Washington & Lee and Bridgewater who stand at 4-1. Even if the Generals and Eagles gain ground, the Hornets own the tiebreaker with victories over both teams.
The Lynchburg offense fired home five goals off of 14 shots in the first half and the defense held the Yellow Jackets attack in check, not allowing a single shot in the first 35 minutes.
Sophomore Nikki Simpao continues to have a great year as she registered goals in the 7th and 34th minutes, putting her season total to a team-leading 14. Junior Karissa LeMaire netted her fourth goal in 2016 and freshman Katelynn Fuhr was awarded on of her two assists in the game on LeMaire's goal.
Sophomore Isabella Eldridge scored back-to-back goals just over halfway through the first half, giving her eight points in the last three games.
Freshman Caroline Wilkerson earned her first career point as a Hornet with an assist on Simpao's second goal with just under a minute to play in the half. The Hornets would head to the locker room up comfortably, 5-0.
The second half was not much different as the Hornets outshot the Yellow Jackets, 13-2 and sophomore Kayla Copeman tallied her second assist on the night as she fed fellow sophomore Mallory Henderson for the final Lynchburg goal in the 57th minute.
Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Chapman saw time on the field but senior Beka Hess who recorded the majority of the time in the cage improved her record to 7-6 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
Simpao led the Hornets with seven shots while senior Ashley Heuberger uncorked six shots of her own and junior MacKenzie Price added four more.
The Field Hockey team returns to action with a home tilt with Ferrum on Monday, Oct. 24th at 7 p.m. on Shellenberger Field.
