Virginia Beach, Va. -- University of Lynchburg's women's tennis team reached the Old Dominion Athletic Conference tournament championship match for the first time in program history Saturday with a 5-2 win over Randolph-Macon in the conference semifinals at Virginia Wesleyan University's Everett Tennis Center.
The milestone came just a year after Lynchburg reached the tournament semifinals for the first time in program history and improved the Hornets' dual-match record to a best-ever 18-2 in 2019.
"With the huge hearts these ladies bring to the court," Hornets director of tennis Chris Johnson said, "I am not surprised by the result today. I am very proud to battle with them each match!"
Lynchburg took two of the three doubles matches to open play Saturday, both of them in tiebreaking fashion.
The No. 2 duo of seniors Sarah Wyly (Leesburg, Va.) and Lilli Altenburg (Lexington, Va.) was victorious, 8-7 (9-7), and senior Reagan Coon (Churchville, Va.) and freshman Alissa Anderson (Norfolk, Va.) took the No. 3 flight, 8-7 (7-0).
Sophomore Ellen Druebbisch (Jamestown, N.C.) picked up Lynchburg's first singles point at the fifth flight, winning 6-0, 6-1, followed quickly by junior Christina Harris (Falls Church, Va.) at No. 1, 6-3, 6-4. Harris, the 32nd-ranked player in Division III and 16th-ranked in the Atlantic South Region, improved to 15-1 in dual-match play this season and picked up her program-record 64th-career singles victory.
Coon polished off the win at No. 6 with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph to preserve her unblemished singles record in 2019. She improved to 15-0 this season.
Lynchburg will move on to face top-seeded and No. 23-ranked Washington and Lee University in Sunday's noon title match. The Generals have captured the league's last 16 championships.
