Fayetteville, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg's women's tennis team kicked off the 2021 season with a hard-fought 5-4 road victory over Methodist Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets started out on the right foot, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play as Christina Harris and Lauren Pascadlo won, 8-6, at the top flight and Elizabeth Teefey and Alexa Hardesty won, 8-5, at No. 3.
Lynchburg (1-0) took a pair of quick singles wins with Harris at No. 1 (6-0, 6-4) and Alissa Anderson at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2), but the Monarchs fought back to win in straight sets at the second, fourth, and fifth flights.
The match came down to the No. 6 pairing, Caroline Guill for Lynchburg against Valeria Mutate for the Monarchs. Guill took the first set, 6-3, before falling 2-6 in the second. The senior rallied to win the tiebreaking set, 6-3, and secure the match for the Hornets.
It was the first win over Methodist (2-2) for the Hornet women since the 1993 season.
Lynchburg's women's tennis team will make its home debut and open up Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Friday, March 5 by welcoming crosstown rival Randolph College to campus. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
