Greensboro, N.C. -- University of Lynchburg men's golf kicked off its fall schedule at a competitive tournament coming in ninth at the Gate City Invitational on Tuesday afternoon.
The Hornets turned in scores of 286, 297, and 297 for a cumulative 880 over the two-day tournament at Starmount Country Club. Lynchburg bested three of the other four Old Dominion Athletic Conference schools in attendance pacing Averett, Washington and Lee, and Hampden-Sydney while Guilford won the tournament.
Andrew Watson (70-70-74--214) led the way for Lynchburg. The two-time all-conference player was -2 after the opening two rounds on Monday. He made six birdies as he submitted back-to-back 70s on Day 1. He battled on Tuesday making three more birdies and earning a T12th finish.
Alan Van Asch (72-73-73--218) made the lineup for the Hornets as a freshman and tied for 22nd in his first-collegiate tournament. Faced with 36 holes of golf on his first day of college golf, the Raleigh, N.C. product turned in 28 pars on Day 1. He followed through with 14 more pars and a birdie in Round 3 on Tuesday. He tied for the sixth-best performance overall on the par-3s scoring -1 on the short holes.
Eddie Coffren V (70-78-75--223), the ODAC's player and freshman of the year a season ago, came out firing in his sophomore campaign. He birdied his first hole of the tournament with an eagle and two more birdies on the back-9. He converted four more birdies the rest of the way as he worked to a T44th finish. He was one of 18 players in the field to make an eagle.
Harrison Smith (74-76-75--225) earned a tie for 51st with four birdies overall. Elijah Moore (81-81-89--251) rounded out Lynchburg's roster in 88th.
After two trips to the Peach State in 2021-22, Lynchburg men's golf heads back to Georgia for the first time this season on Monday, Oct. 10 for the Royal Lakes Collegiate in Flowery Branch.
