Sandestin, Fla. -- The University of Lynchburg men's and women's golf teams competed against high-level Division III competition at the 2024 Golfweek October Classic at the Raven Golf Club this week. The men's squad snagged a fourth-place finish with a team score of -5 while the women's crew tied for 15th.
Senior
Eddie Coffren V led the way for the Hornets on the men's side with a -7 final score, which was enough to tie for sixth place. Coffren improved each round throughout the tournament, concluding the first round even with par. The second round saw a -2 finish and he rounded out his stellar performance with a score of -5, all of which he achieved on the back nine. With an even score on the front half, Coffren nailed four birdies and an eagle to help him end with a score of 66 on the round.
Junior
Alan Van Asch and Sophomore
Simon Burgos both concluded the tournament with a +1 final score, tying for 33rd place. Van Asch finished the first round three under par, the best score of the day for Lynchburg. He wrapped up rounds two and three with scores of +3 and +1, respectively. Chamberlin closed out the final round of the tournament with his best performance of the week at -3. He concluded rounds one and two at -1 and +5, respectively.
The Hornet performers that rounded out the team score were junior
Simon Burgos and freshman
Dennis McGowan. Burgos ended tied for 56th with a score of +5 and McGowan finished tied for 75th with a +8 final score.
Lynchburg has one more tournament before concluding its 2024 fall slate. The Hornets will travel to Greensboro, N.C. for the O'Briant-Jensen Memorial from Sunday, October 27 through Tuesday, October 29, hosted by The Cardinal Golf Club.
The women's golf team wound up with a +65 collective team score for the tournament, placing them at 15th place alongside Trinity University. Junior
Gabbie Hollberg highlighted the Lynchburg performance with a +11 finish, enough to tie for 32nd overall. Hollberg had the best round of the tournament for the Hornets in the first round, finishing one under on the back nine and one over for the entire round.
Junior
Lily Rowe was the second-best finisher for Lynchburg, ending the tournament tied for 63rd with a score of +17. Her best round came on the final day, ending the front nine one under par and closing out the round at +3. Graduate
Sydney Pickell was the next top spot for the Hornets, tying for 70th with a +20 score. After a +14 first round, Pickell bounced back and had performances of +2 and +4 in the final two rounds.
Senior
Emma Nicol and sophomore
Madelyn Linares closed out the Lynchburg performers with scores of +36 and +23, respectively. Nicol tied for 107th while Linares tied for 81st place.
The Hornets' women's golf squad has wrapped up its fall slate and looks ahead to the 2025 spring schedule, which will be announced at a later date.
