Lynchburg, Va. — The University of Lynchburg track & field teams prepare to travel for a new slate of last-chance meets as the Hornets compete at the Lenoir-Rhyne Last Chance & Multi #1 Meet and the Widener Last Chance Qualifier.
On Saturday and Sunday, Lynchburg's Micah Leech and Margo Fox will compete in multi-events and attempt to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Multi-events include a combination of running, jumping and throwing events, though they are not offered at every meet. With limited chances to compete, multi-athletes often look to qualify for NCAAs during the final weeks of the season.
During the indoor campaign, Fox set a new program record in the women's pentathlon, tallying 3,294 points at the South Region Qualifier hosted by Shenandoah University. The junior earned four top-10 marks at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships, including an individual title in the women's long jump, and will look to remain consistent in her second heptathlon of the outdoor season.
Leech, similarly to Fox, finished inside the top six of four separate events at the ODAC Championships and emerged victorious in the men's long jump. The sophomore enters his first multi-event since February 1st when he competed in the indoor heptathlon at the Bast-Cregger Multi Invitational.
Lynchburg will look to qualify its men's 4x100m team in the nation's top 16 with a quick time this weekend. Heading into Saturday, the 16th-place bubble time currently sits at 40.81, while the Hornets remain in 24th.
Other notable competitors at Lenoir-Rhyne include Kacey Kelly and Demetri Hinton in jumping events, Kenzie Swicegood in throwing events and several other sprinters in the 100m and 200m dash.
For the distance squad, Hannah Edwards will return to action in the women's 800m run after a 2:14.03 performance at the Liberty Twilight. Edwards' 2:12.47 time at the Hill City Twilight, a three-second personal best at the time, is the second-fastest mark in school history behind Natalie Beazley (formerly Natalie Deacon).Â
Other distance athletes will potentially use the Widener Last Chance Qualifier as a tune-up for the NCAA Championships in Geneva, Ohio.
Temperatures in Hickory, N.C. at Lenoir-Rhyne will range in the 60s throughout the weekend with highs in the low 70s under partly cloudy skies. Rain could enter the forecast on Sunday with a 30 to 40 percent chance.
At Widener University, the premature forecast for Monday evening indicates temperatures spanning through the 70s and highs reaching 80 degrees.Â
