Birmingham, Ala. – Alex Jordan paced the University of Lynchburg indoor track & field teams on day one of the NCAA Indoor Championships with a sixth-place All-American finish in the men's 5,000m run.
Jordan, Lamont Victoria and Micah Leech competed for the Hornets in the opening day of competition, which helped the team clinch three points for the final standings. Jordan's 14:11.99 performance in the men's 5,000m final gave the sophomore his first track & field All-American finish at Lynchburg.Â
Throughout the race, Jordan gained eight positions after the opening lap to move into sixth. He sprinted to a 31-second final lap to secure the team's first All-American performance of the meet.
In the men's 60m dash prelims, Lamont Victoria toppled the conference record with a 6.70 mark to clinch the fourth-fastest time in the field. Despite slipping out of the blocks, the senior surged to a third-place result in section one and advanced to the finals as the next-fastest time after auto qualifiers.
Earlier in the season, Victoria demolished the conference record in the men's high jump with a 7' ½" (2.15m) mark. Tomorrow, Victoria will compete in both the men's 60m final and the men's high jump final.Â
In the men's heptathlon, Micah Leech posted 2,874 points on the day through four events, setting a personal best for day one of competition by over 100 points.
Leech opened the day with a 7.16 performance in the 60-meter dash, tallying 826 points for sixth place in the event. The junior fell shy of a new personal best by three hundredths of a second.
In the long jump, Leech secured sixth place with a 22' 2½" (6.77m) leap to collect 760 total points. Leech progressively improved each of his three attempts to climb into sixth with the final jump.Â
Following a 10th-place performance in the men's shot put (39' 6" or 12.04m), Leech closed the day by clearing the 6' 1¼" (1.86m) bar in the men's high jump to earn 10th. Leech occupies fifth place in the overall men's heptathlon standings with the 60m hurdles, pole vault, and 1,000m remaining.
The Hornets return to action on Saturday, March 14, beginning with the men's heptathlon at 11:00 a.m.
