Lynchburg, Va. – Tristan Wright solidified school records in the men's 100m and 200m dash as the University of Lynchburg outdoor track & field teams peppered the program's top-ten lists at the Jack M. Toms Alumni Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday afternoon, Wright clocked 10.45 in the 100m prelims to clinch a spot in finals and break the previous school record of 10.59 set by Alex Shadkhoo. In finals, the freshman lowered his time to 10.42 to finish third in the competitive field.
Later in the meet, Wright returned to action with a 21.42 performance in the 200m dash, breaking Johnny Harris' 21.44 school record from 2002. Following the weekend's races, Wright sits third in Division III for 100m and 200m qualifying; both events feature an ODAC athlete as the nation's fastest performance in the young outdoor season.
To begin the action on Friday, Tor Hotung-Davidsen led a trio of Hornets that placed inside the nation's top ten for the men's 1500m run. Hotung-Davidsen clocked 3:45.71 to secure a five-second personal best and rise to third on Lynchburg's all-time performance list. Sam Llaneza finished in 3:47.28 for second, while Chasen Hunt's 3:47.99 result solidified fourth place in the field.
Hotung-Davidsen, Llaneza and Hunt now occupy second, third and fourth, respectively, in the national men's 1500 standings. Marko Kovacevic (3:54.67) crossed the line in eighth while Randy White (3:55.24) finished ninth, and both earned personal bests.
On the women's side, Allison Dell finished fourth with a 4:41.33 performance, a four-second improvement from her previous 4:45 PR.
For field events on Friday, Kacey Kelly earned fourth with a 124' 4" (37.90m) mark out of 29 competitors. In pole vault, Allison Bobst (11' 5¾") earned fourth place while Cameron Weber (10' 11¾") vaulted for seventh. Kenzie Swicegood placed fifth in the women's hammer throw with a 136' 9" (41.69m) hurl, while Julian Powell and Micah Leech (13' 3½") finished fifth in the men's pole vault. Powell finished two positions ahead in the tiebreaker.
In the 100m dash, Jaylen Jones joined Wright in the top ten with a 10.61 qualifying performance in prelims. Jones finished fifth in the final, clocking 10.52 for a personal best and the second-fastest time in school history behind Wright.Â
For the women's squad, Rylee Turner qualified for finals with a 12.37 race. Turning the page from prelims, she earned 12.31 to finish fifth and improve her previous personal best of 12.84 heading into the weekend. Turner also finished 25.44 for eighth in the women's 200m.
Betsy Mohnkern finished second in the 100 hurdles with a 14.36 performance for sixth in the nation. The grad student also snuck inside the top ten of the women's 200m, crossing the line in 25.74 for tenth place and a personal best.
Following a dominant 1500 display, Tor Hotung-Davidsen rose to the occasion in the men's 800m and ousted the competition for first place with a 1:49.95 result. Hotung-Davidsen was the only athlete under 1:50, and the race served as his first outdoor 800m following his second-place performance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Rochester, N.Y.
Sam Llaneza clocked 1:50.13 for second, and the pair now occupies second and third in the DIII standings.
Other track athletes finishing inside the top ten for their respective events include Margo Fox's sixth-place 1:08.88 performance and Anna Miller's eighth-place 1:10.08 run in the women's 400 hurdles. Michael Hamm placed ninth in the men's 200m with a 21.82 finish.
The Hornets tallied 17 top-ten performances in Saturday's field events. Jamarcus Brown began his outdoor campaign with a victory in the men's high jump, finishing at a 6' 7½" (2.02m) mark. Teammate Jaren Lee joined him in the top five, finishing second at 6' 3½" (1.92m). Aidan Hipp finished sixth at the same height, though it required more attempts for him to clear the bar.
Demetri Hinton finished third in the men's triple jump (46' 8" or 14.22m), and Kacey Kelly earned a podium finish in the women's triple with a 39' 4" (11.99m) leap. She finished fifth in the women's long jump (17' 9½" or 5.42m), just behind teammate Margo Fox who placed fourth (18' 3¾"). Kenzie Swicegood placed fifth in the women's discus (121' 4" or 37.00m).
Jamarcus Brown and Demetri Hinton occupy spots inside the nation's top ten for their respective field events, while Kacey Kelly is first in DIII for the triple jump after this weekend. She set a 12.34 mark at the NCAA Indoor Championships two weeks before.
The Hornets return to action next weekend as they travel to Williamsburg, Va. for the Colonial Relays.
