Men's Distance Shatters Four-Minute Mile at Hill City Twilight!

Lynchburg, Va. – Tor Hotung-Davidsen and Sam Llaneza broke the historic four-minute mark in the men's mile at the Hill City Twilight as the Hornets cemented the top three outdoor mile marks in Division III history!

After years of attempting to find the perfect racing conditions for the event, Friday evening proved to be special as temperatures ranged through the 70s. On a night when five facility records fell, everyone crowded the track as the Lynchburg men made their way down the straightaway.

Tor Hotung-Davidsen clocked a 57.00-second 400 in the final lap to surge ahead of pace and solidify the 3:58.35 finish for the fastest mark in DIII history. At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Hotung-Davidsen ran the fourth-fastest time in the DIII record books in the men's 1,500m with a 3:42.12 performance. He owns outdoor conference records in the 800m and 1,500m.

His counterpart, grad student Sam Llaneza, finally cracked the four-minute mark by finishing in 3:59.41. Llaneza owns the sixth-fastest men's 1,500m time in DIII History with a 3:42.97 performance in Azusa, and he won the national title at the 2024 NCAA Championships in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Chasen Hunt crossed the line with the third-fastest time in DIII History, falling just short of the four-minute mark with a 4:00.98 result. Weeks removed from conquering the DIII national record in the men's 5k, Hunt finished his final lap in 58.91 seconds to become part of another historic endeavor.

While the mile is not competed at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, the performance is a remarkable benchmark for athletes who have progressed at an incomprehensible pace throughout their Lynchburg careers. The three Hornet men look destined to produce historic results and vie for national titles at the NCAA Championships in late May.

Other Hornets also created a memorable night at Lynchburg's final home meet. Jamarcus Brown cleared 6' 11" (2.11m) in the men's high jump to win the event and accelerate to third in the NCAA standings heading into this weekend. Teammate Elijah Rose finished second with a 6' 4¾" (1.95m) mark, Jaren Lee finished third with a 6' 0¾" (1.85m) bar with Aidan Hipp tied at the same height for fourth.

Jaylen Jones improved his 100m time after a podium finish at the ODAC Championships. The senior won the event with a 10.45 performance, which would qualify him for 14th in the nation heading into the weekend. Michael Hamm placed second with a 10.65 result.

Hannah Edwards flirted with a national-qualifying time in the women's 800m, crushing her previous PR of 2:15 and soaring to a 2:12.47 finish. The result places her 27th in the nation, just outside of the top 22 that advance to NCAAs.

Adelynn Carpenter sailed to a 17:17.76 performance in the women's 5,000m invitational against stellar DI competition to finish seventh in the section. The freshman now holds the fifth-fastest time in outdoor program history, also becoming the fifth woman in the past four seasons to dip under 17:20. The result was a 21-second improvement from her 17:38.08 season-best at the ODAC Championships.

In the men's 400m dash, Logan Koenig earned a personal best with a 50.98 finish to dip under the 51-second barrier. The sophomore set another monumental PR the weekend before at the ODAC Championships, having come into the season running 53.00. Noah Duffy finished third in 53.43m, while Samaria Little set a personal best in the women's 400m with a 1:01.46 performance for eighth.

Draven Fernandez set a new PR in the men's 1,500m, finishing inside the top 15 with a 4:02.46 result.

In field events, Kya Rucker set a new personal best in the women's hammer throw for fifth with a 130' 11½" (39.92m) hurl. Madeline Brainard (123' 5" or 37.62m) finished sixth while Kennedy Johnson (115' 2½" or 35.12m) also scored in seventh. In the women's discus, Kenzie Swicegood earned a podium spot with a 128' 1" (39.04m) throw for third.

Selah Parker finished third in the women's long jump with a 16' 3½" (4.97m) leap. In the men's long jump, Guillermo Martino finished second with a 21' 0¾" (6.42m) performance and Ty Mauer solidified third place with a 20' 11¾" (6.40m) result.

Following one of the most memorable nights on Jack M. Toms Track, the Hornets will return to action on Tuesday, May 6 as Lynchburg sends athletes to compete at the Liberty Twilight.
