William H. "Bill" Shellenberger was the legendary men's soccer coach and director of athletics for Lynchburg College. He began the Lynchburg men's soccer program in 1954 and led the Hornets to a 371-167-48 record over 34 seasons. He won numerous national awards, was inducted into eight halls of fame, and in 1991, the Virginia General Assembly recognized him for his "Unparalleled Record of Achievement." Sports Illustrated dubbed him "the winningest coach ever in college soccer" in a 1978 feature, which he was for many years.

The pitch at Lynchburg was named in his honor in 1990, and former LC students establed the William H. Shellenberger Scholarship Fund in his honor.

He passed away in 2009 at age 88.
