Jack Hobbs '78 was a standout pitcher for the Lynchburg College baseball teams of the mid-1970s, culminating with an All-America honor in 1978.

He was a member of the Hornets' Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship team in 1977 and led the team to a pair of NCAA tournament berths. He struck out 98 hitters in 1978, a mark that still tops the Lynchburg record book.

After he graduated, the Seattle Mariners selected Hobbs in the seventh round of the 1978 MLB amateur draft. In 1980, the Minnesota Twins selected him in the Rule 5 draft, and he made his Major League debut for that ballclub August 31, 1981 against the New York Yankees. He pitched in four games for the Twins in 1981, compiling 

Hobbs is one of just two Lynchburg alumni to play Major League Baseball. He went on to a successful career in radio broadcasting.
