William H. "Hank" Norton Jr. '51 joined the U.S. Army after graduating from Lynchburg College and served during the Korean War, where he played football for an Army post team in Frankfurt, Germany.

He later became the football coach at Ferrum College, leading the Panthers to four junior college national championships (1965, '67, '74, and '77) and four NCAA playoff berths. He was also the Ferrum athletic director for more than 20 years.

He retired from coaching in 1993 and passed away in 2019.
