Dr. Marie Lewis served Lynchburg College in a variety of ways from her arrival at Westover in 1972 to her retirement in 2006, serving as a coach and mentor as well as a professor and chair of the department of Health, Movement Science, and Recreation.

She encouraged the LC administration to add volleyball as a varsity sport in 1973 and spent 21 seasons (1973-77, 79-80, 92-2005) leading the Hornet volleyball program, including a trip to the 1981 AIAW Division III national tournament.

Dr. Lewis amassed more than 500 coaching victories between her leadership of the LC volleyball and women's basketball programs. She earned three Old Dominion Athletic Conference coach of the year awards (1989 in women's basketball, 1999 and 2000 in volleyball).
