Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame
Chip Childress played shortstop and pitched for the Lynchburg baseball team from 1979 through 1982, where he was an integral part of teams that qualified for the NCAA Division III South Region Tournaments, including a second place finish in 1981. He earned a spot on two ABCA All-American Teams and three All-ODAC Teams during his tenure in the Hill City. Childress still holds the Lynchburg program record for fewest hits allowed in a season, minimum 20 innings, for his 1982 performance on the mound where he allowed just 14 hits all season. He finished his senior season with a team-leading 35 hits in 127 at bats. The two-way star was drafted by the Atlanta Braves following his time at Lynchburg. He played five seasons for the Atlanta Braves' minor league team, advancing as high as the AAA level.Â
