E. Wayne Proffitt '67 was the first All-American in Lynchburg men's basketball history. He is the all-time leading scorer in Hornets history with 1,842 points, a mark he reached in just three seasons at Lynchburg.

Proffitt was named All-America in both 1966 and '67 and led Lynchburg to a Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship in 1965. He scored 68 points against UNC Charlotte on February 5, 1966, a mark that still stands as a Virginia collegiate record. Proffitt scored 50 points or more six times in his career.

Proffitt later coached Lynchburg's men's basketball team to 249 victories between 1970 and 1986, including an Old Dominion Athletic Conference title in 1979 and a pair of NCAA tournaments.

The court inside Turner Gymnasium bears his name.
