Wooldridge went on to become the first commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in 1976, a position he held until his retirement in 1997. He was instrumental in bringing the NCAA Division III football championship, the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl, to its longtime home in Salem and spearheaded the ODAC's national prominence as the host for a number of Division III national championships over the years.

An accomplished men's basketball official as well, he called games for 23 years in a vast variety of positions and settings. He spent 21 years as an official with the Atlantic Coast Conference. He was one of two Americans chosen to officiate men's basketball at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal.

The press box at James C. Fox Field, Lynchburg's baseball facility, was named for Wooldridge in 2008. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes inducted him into its Hall of Champions in 2017.
